Fear of Success
Believe it or not, one of the biggest barriers to people trying new things is NOT the fear of failure but the fear of success. Overcome that fear and succeed.

It sounds funny, you fear success and that it was you are being held back? Well it is true. Many of us are brought up to fear success. We are told that it is a bad thing and it is not for us. We are told you need to be special for this. We are often told to be humble in victory and not to boast. We are often more comfortable with failure as we know who to blame for it.
We may not know how to handle success. Look at the number of us who, reject an apology and praise. Look at the number of us who "say it was nothing" and shrug things off. What is worse, is then we gripe about not being rewarded for our efforts.
Such is our fear of success, that we will continue to accept failure because we know how to handle this. Many of us handle failure on a daily basis but do not know how to handle success. Such is our fear of success that we say "it will never happen" and do not even try.
Learning to handle success is an enlightening experience. Overcoming our fear of it can be life changing moment. So how do we overcome our fear of success? As ever, there is no one answer and a simple solution to this, it is a mixture including:
  • Look at the skills you have to offer. The fact that you are reading this is significant.
  • The sin is not trying and failing, the sin is not trying at all.
  • Think about what you want to do and what you need to be content.
  • You deserve it.
  • Take it one step at a time.
  • Take that first step.
Accept the reward, you are entitled to it, graciously.
What then is the best way to handle success? Some things to consider include:
  • Pause to reflect.
  • Allow people to congratulate and thank them.
  • Accept an apology. Thank them for it and appreciate it.
  • Appreciate the success. It is yours and well deserved.
  • Share it with those that helped.
  • Keep focusing on where you want to go next.
